Backup dynamic disk is needed to avoid data loss and dynamic volume failure

Dynamic volume failure?

"I've got a severe issue. My Dynamic disk drive setup just crashed. I recently reinstalled XP on my computer and kept a backup on that dynamic deal. I just removed my CDROM/DVD drive and replaced it with a hot-swap bay for some work I'm doing (Ghosting some drives for that computer tech) and disk management yelled at me saying that the dynamic disk needed to be reactivated. It's given me that error before, so I reactivated the disks and started browsing the drive. One of the folders wouldn't open because it was invalid, so I ran chkdsk on it, found a whole bunch of errors, so I ran chkdsk again with /f and /r. I had to force a dismount so I did, and it stopped at the first error.

I restarted the computer and ran chkdsk again, but now I get the following error: The File System is NTFS. Unable to determine the version and state. CHKDSK aborted.

Disk manager reports the drive(s) as healthy but makes no mention of the NTFS file system. Disk manager also reports my disks as 'RAW'. The dynamic disk spans across four IDE drives.

So what should I do? I have 5 years worth of important stuff on that drive setup. I can't lose it. Would I be able to safely reformat the drives and recover the data using recovery software or is there an alternative? How is the data stored on a dynamic disk? Are bits of one file on all four drives or what? If one drive kicks the bucket what happens? Please help me out :( "

Importance of dynamic volume backup

Have you ever encounter the situation above and then get embarrassed? When the dynamic disk becomes raw or crashed which does not allow you to enter the disk, you can just recover data from raw disk and then format it to access the disk again. However, data recovery software cannot ensure you to get all data back. If you have backed up dynamic disk before, you just need to restore it to the new one.
