First, if you want to upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista or install Windows 7 on the partition that runs Windows XP before, you are very likely to encounter the problem that the partition size is too small to install Windows 7, but you cannot delete and reset the partitions, as many files are stored on these partitions. Even if you can back up files and reset the partitions to install Windows 7, it is time-consuming. Then you may bring Windows 7 partition manager software to mind.
Second, after using Windows 7 for a period, you may also encounter the problem that the system partition space becomes lower and needs to be expanded, as the basic partition required for Windows 7 is 16GB, furthermore, you need to install more applications for future use. Then you need Windows 7 partition manager software to extend Windows 7 partition without destroying the data.
Windows 7 disk management provides shrink and extend features to manage partition size. The operations are very simple. Just right click the partition and choose extend, then you can expand partition in Windows 7 easily. But it has a huge disadvantage that you cannot extend a partition in Windows 7 if there is no unallocated space behind the partition you want to extend. In this case, to extend Windows 7 partition including the system partition, you have to delete the partition behind it.
Diskpart command line is built in Windows 7, too. As it is not GUI, it is very inconvenient to operate. Why not use free Windows 7 partition manager to extend partitions as well as the system partition in Windows 7? It provides simple GUI, mouse dragging, disk/partition copy, partition recovery, etc. Besides "Resize/move partition", it can also merge two partitions to expand system drive.
