Question: I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 64bit installed in to C drive. Initially we have given 60GB for C drive. After installing all the required applications and Server Software's like SQL Server 2008 R2 full, Share point 2010 Full, Microsoft Office 2010, Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate etc., my server is having only 8GB space left on C Drive. Now I would like to increase the C drive size to 100GB. How can I do that? Any partition manager software available to do that? Please help me to fix this issue.
Answer: Hi, you can use the native Disk Manager of Windows Server 2008 R2 to extend the system drive, however, there should be a sequential disk space after the C:\ drive (you may delete the D:\ drive if there are less data in D: drive).
I found the above mentioned example from a tech-forum where server users share their experience together. So are you a Windows Server user? And have you ever been troubled by insufficient space of your server partitions, especially the system or boot partition? Have you ever tried to solve the problem through the Disk Manager installed in Windows Server?
Just as mentioned in the example, the Disk Manager built-in Windows Server 2008 is only available when there is unallocated space just behind the partition that you want to increase. If there is no such required space behind the one you want to resize, the Disk Manager can do nothing for you.
With the incessant use of server computer, disk partitions are gradually stored with increasing data unconsciously which consequently takes up more and more disk space. If the system partition, a comparatively smaller partition, stores too much data, the computer operating speed and the partition performance will be greatly affected. Therefore, we should spare more space for such partition by increasing partition capacity.
If you often potter around the tech-forum, you will find many users are inquiring how they could increase partition capacity under Windows Server without data loss or interruption to their work. When the partition size grows smaller and smaller, the operating speed of application programs would become extremely slow or even be infected by virus. Under this condition, some may choose to repartition disk which however would result in strenuous work and data loss. This is what we expect not to happen.
Therefore, server users leave their message in those forums and hope someone would give them some useful advice to keep their data safe and also make their work easy. Fortunately, now we have third-party partition magic server software to resolve this problem by increasing partition capacity without any data loss. Among sea of partition manager software, I would like to recommend EaseUS Partition Master Server which enables you to increase your partition capacity, especially the system partition in an easy, fast and safe way to minimize the downtime of your server and maximize its performance.
As Partition Magic Server alternative, EaseUS Partition Master Server is an all-round Windows Server partition manager that performs necessary hard disk partition maintenance, provides powerful data protection, and minimizes server downtime to increase the efficiency of Windows-based system administration. The flawless hard disk management functions are brought together for Windows Server 2000/2003/2008(R2 SP1 included) on MBR, GUID partition table (GPT) disk and RAID. The following is a detailed instruction of how to increase server partition capacity with EaseUS Partition Master Server.
1. Launch EaseUS Partition Master Server.

2. Select partition E:, right click it, select "Resize/Move partition" and resize E: drive to make some unallocated space as the picture showing below.

3. Move E: drive rightwards and leave the unallocated space behind the system partition (C: drive) and click OK.

4. Select the system partition (C: drive), right click to select "Resize/Move partition", and extend system partition (C: drive) with the free space.

5. Click Apply.
NOTE: It is not necessary to follow the above steps strictly to resize server partition: As the case of having some unallocated space right behind the partition you want to extend, you don't have to shrink other partition for free space. Resize the target partition directly with "Resize/Move partition".
