Summary:
Pen drive is write protected? This page shows you how to remove write protection from pen drive using Regedit.exe and how to format a write protected pen drive with third-party partition software.

How can I remove the write protection from pen drive?

"My USB pen drive is write protected and it happened when I copied a 3 gig size folder and the write protection stop the copying process. Whenever I let my flash drive inserted on the comp for like 5-6 mins the write protected appeared again I didn't know how I removed it but when I tried to copy a 9 gig folder the problem happened again. I can neither disable the write protection nor format the USB pen drive because it always shows the error as "The Disk is Write Protected". Is there any efficient way to remove "the Disk is Write Protected" error and format the USB pen drive?"

Possible ways to remove write protection from pen drive

Method 1. Remove write protection from pen drive using Regedit.exe

When you are facing pen drive is write protected error, it is difficult for you to erase or format the drive. But don’t worry! There is a way. You can remove the write protection, and then format a write-protected USB flash drive with no hassle. First you can check if there is a switch on your flash drive to disable the write protection. If you do not find the switch, you should remove it using Regedit.exe. Here are the steps:

1. Plug in your pen drive to a computer.
2. Click “Start” on the taskbar to open “Run” and type in “regedit”.
3. Hit “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” to expand “System”.
4. Find “Current Control Set” in “System” list to click “Control”.
5. Check whether there is a key named “Storage Device Policies” to change the digit in the “DWORD value” box into "0" and press “OK” to save the change.

Note: if you cannot find the key named “Storage Device Policies”, you are supposed to create a one: right click “Control” to create a new key and name it as “Storage Device Policies”=> right click this new key to open “DWORD Value” and name it as “write protect”=> Double click it to change number.

After finishing all these steps, close Regedit and restart your computer. Connect your USB pen drive again, and you should find it is no longer write protected. You can now format the drive as normal by right-clicking on it in My Computer and choosing Format.

Method 2. Format a write-protected pen drive with EaseUS partition software

If the above method doesn’t work, you can try the second solution - formatting the write-protected pen drive with EaseUS partition software. It is the most easiest way to remove write protection from pen drive. Except for USB flash drive, the powerful third-party disk partition management tool also allows you to format a write-protected SD card. Here is the detailed guide:

Note: Smaller cluster size makes less wasting of disk space. The smaller cluster size is, the bigger file allocation table (FAT) will be. The bigger the FAT is, the slower the operation system works with the disk.

Step 5. Click "Apply" to confirm to format the write-protected USB pen drive.
